Do we live in comfortable homes? This may seem like an odd question for some individuals. Of course we live in comfortable homes. When you compare the current homes with the homes of the past, one has to admit that the level of comfort and enjoyment is unbelievably high. So, the simplest answer to my question is that the level of comfort of our homes cannot be questioned. Is that really the case? Are our homes designed for rat control?

Well, that changes the question completely. When we look at our homes, we focus on human beings and their comforts. We focus on whether our family members will have a comfortable experience. Well, what about rats? They have so many pieces of furniture designed to serve as a wonderful hiding place for rats. In such a scenario, it is next to impossible to actually catch the rat and send it out of the house. The only option available is to make use of sticky pads or pesticides that will kill the rat when consumed.

This leads to another complication because the rat must be killed inside the house but it should die outside the house. What will happen if a rat dies at the far end of your king sized bed? It will be virtually impossible for you to live in the house. You will probably have to call professionals to dismantle the bed and remove the dead animal. Of course, many people indicate that it is advisable to maintain the house in such a manner that the rat does not enter it in the first place.

Well, your ability to control infestation of rats is not dependent on the level of cleanliness alone. There are other factors and issues involved. In all this, my basic question remains unanswered. How comfortable are our homes? When we consider the problem of the presence of rats, then one must admit that things can be better.

No matter how hard I try, I find it virtually impossible to ignore the implications of having a Pensieve that Prof. Albus Dumbledore had in the famous Harry Potter books. Would it not be wonderful if you could remove your thoughts from your brain and observe them as a third person? Well, I can tell you that such a device with be a god sent gift for a person like me who thinks a lot.

There are instances when I start on a particular line of thought and proceed to think up of something completely different only to come back to the original thought with a completely different perspective. Of course, Dumbledore focused on his past experiences but I will focus on each and every thought I have. To look at it from the outside will be such a relief. I also think it will help me get a lot more work done because I will be in a position to stop thinking and actually start working.

Of course, I am taking my time because I feel that a writer who does not think a lot is definitely not going to succeed in life. Well, I am not a success in life but I can tell you that this is a fundamental requirement of becoming a good writer. It is no different than having basic knowledge of the psychology of taxi service providers when you are arranging for Heathrow transfers services.

I am sure technology will come up with a solution that will help us transfer our thoughts and let it out of the system. Of course, a device that replicates what we are thinking is easy to design. However, a device that will help us remove the thoughts from our head and place them into the device will be a lot more difficult, right?

There’s a part in the new David Fincher film The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo where a very dangerous man tells one of the leading characters – quite rightly – that he should have learned to trust his instinct by now. He points out – and this is more of an observation than a judgement – that most people know only too well what is about to happen, yet their fear of looking silly or somehow inadequate prevents them from trusting their gut instinct. And life? Money? It all relies on instinct to a certain degree – numbers are one thing but they’re certainly not the be all and end all. There’s a lot to be said for going with what feels right and facing up to what looks wrong.

…the decision seems to make itself: you need quality, and experience equates to that…

Let’s say, for example, you’re starting a company that specialises in the most upmarket business suit imaginable. You’re selling online and the first thing you need to do is get some good web copy written for the site. Do you A) go with the more experienced writer who charges a lot but somehow seems less personable but has lots in his or her portfolio, or do you go for B) the writer who is cheaper, just starting out and has an enthusiasm that you feel is rare in people?

Of course, the decision seems to make itself: you need quality, and experience equates to that. Yet when you choose this person it ends up costing you much more than you would have liked and the writer seems jaded and unable to take criticism well.

Suddenly you remember the other writer, and quickly you decide to sack your present writer and start again with her…

Life is full of situations just like this. Ones where hindsight would have been good had it been there before. But does it really matter we make mistakes and don’t always trust our judgement? I don’t think so. The important thing is that we learn from these things and use our heads and our hearts in more equal measure in the future.

I find myself getting more and more angry these days with the constant ‘nanny state'offering ‘advice'on what we should be doing with ourselves, our children, our homes, and even our money. I find it almost insulting some of the reports that come out these days, where we are being told how to raise our children, how to eat properly and how to look after our money. It seems as though soon there will be big posters telling me how to go to the toilet correctly!

The constant new rules and regulations that come out are usually to force the small minority of people who are unable to think and act correctly into conforming to the usual practises or society. It is done by threatening to punish them if they do not.

The latest one to affect my life has come about as a result of the school regulations that now state that it is no longer my choice as a parent whether I wish to take my child out of school for a few days, as I can be fined for it. Now I know the rule was made to try and ensure that truancy figures are reduced by making parents of truant children start to care about whether their kids are in school or not, because if they are not they will be financially punished.

The problem I have with this, is that for the vast majority of parents this is a big restriction on their ability to choose what is best for their own child. In my case, I was hoping to take my son to visit his family in Spain for a few days during term time, as we cannot afford the high flight prices in the holiday periods. Now I am unable to do this for fear of facing punishment.

It is a restriction of my right to decide what I wish to do with my own son’s life, and is quite frankly insulting to my intelligence. I think I should be the one deciding whether my own son is allowed to miss a few days of school or not, not the government. especially as I am a responsible parent who ensures that he attends school everyday under normal circumstances!

That title is wrong, actually. It should read: the present in 200 years. And this, below, is my imagining of it.

There will be no screens of any kind. There will be no computers, either. What there will be is the ability to see something and have it manifest right there before you at a moment’s notice. You will buy these things and there will be a restriction, of course, of what you can and can’t see in public (you couldn’t just have nude sexy women wandering about before you when there are families around).

There will be no Facebook in 200 years, because it is pointless. To send information to someone, all you need do is stand at a special Thought Teleportation Point and you will be able to connect with whoever it is instantly, providing they accept you communicating with them, of course.

I for one would love to be able to live in a world where I could communicate with anyone instantly. My phone, although brand-new, is utterly hopeless

But the world will be full of amazing things. Why? Because everyone will see the world how they need to see it. Depressed people will see a world which is not too happy and not too sad, and people who are stressed by crowds will see a world without so many people in it. In other words, it’ll be a kind of utopia.

The only thing which troubles me about this future world is the lack of problems. Because in a world without problems, surely that’s got to be a problem in its own right? For example, say I want to buy Caravan insurance and the man on the phone at the insurance company is being really nice. After a week of niceness, wouldn’t I like to feel some kind of tension. Wouldn’t I want to have something to get annoyed about? I don’t know for sure, but I think I would.

Of course, there will be plenty of problems which we will be pleased to see the back of. For example: the post arriving late, crime, murder, rape and all that. So I suppose the good things would out-weigh the negatives. And I for one would love to be able to live in a world where I could communicate with anyone instantly. My phone, although brand-new, is utterly hopeless about getting a signal anywhere. Besides that, I am always dropping it on the floor – something which wouldn’t happen in the future as it is quite possible that in 200 years there will be no floor.

Being a writer is a great job, so to speak, it doesn’t always pay the bills though. I have done my share of bussing tables and working in coffee shops and working behind grimy bars and now I just need to do a job that I love and that will inspire me while to write something extraordinary or just something that is a least creative. I have whittled my options down a bit and this is what I am left with.

I could be a sign maker. I work with words, to be a sign writer I would simply need to make those words look good on a sign above a shop or something. The only problems here is that all the shops I see already have signs so why the hell would they need another one?

One of my other options is to work part time as a journalist. Another problem though, I have no experience of journalism at all so it could be a difficult to make myself any money by writing news stories of whatever. There’s always copywriters though, I suppose they can make a little bit of money on the side and it is still creative writing.

My last idea was to join the circus. Isn’t that what all creatives do when they are down on their luck and need to make abit of cash on the side or is that just what I have been led to believe by watching ridiculous films when I was growing up? Then there’s the travelling fairground…

There are however multiple money saving myths abound.

Here we are the top five saving money myths that many people fall for that independent financial advisor will tell you.

Savings accounts: The name in itself implies that we should be saving money by depositing our funds but that isn’t necessarily the case. In an emergency, it is readily accessible but there are a few cons to consider. For those of you that have incurred debts (credit card etc), the interest rate is probably higher than the rate you receive from your savings account and that point alone means that money is being lost.

I only buy in the sales: This idea works only if we purchase items we were going to pay full price for in the first place. For those shopaholics out there, this savings method is not effective. In the sales, we tend to purchase items we wouldn’t normally buy but because it’s on sale. We also buy two to three times than usual, so where is the money being saved?

Refinancing the mortgage: Paying lower installments does not necessarily equate to saving money. During the first few years of the loan we pay almost only interest. Instead of extending the term and lowering the interest, try the opposite.

Using a 0% or cash back credit card: This only works if you already possess the money to pay for the items you have purchased on the card. If you pay outside the 0% period, the only thing you’re doing is delaying the inevitable - the payment. You would only be saving if you pay off the debt every month, if there aren’t any annual fees and other such conditions. </LI

I have been thinking a lot about mu future recently. It seems like a couple of weeks ago that I was enjoying a scrumptious Christmas dinner around the table with all my family and then no time later I am barbecuing in the park with a bunch of friends and the sun is shining brightly. What I mean is that time seems to pass by so quickly the calendar has jumper a few months from December to June without anything much happening in the middle. Now it seems like another New Years Eve is going to come around without me being much further on in my life.
Maybe I’ll have children and buy a house one day but that is not that likely to happen this year. Maybe I’ll get a gp doctor job or even better a doctor husband who can pay for a lavish lifestyle while I spend all of his hard earned cash on beautiful shoes and lunches with friends. The truth is though that I do not want a conventional lifestyle, I don’t want to grow up to quickly and have all the responsibility that comes with being a real adult. I want to carry on having fun and spending days in the park, partying all weekend and staying in bed on a Sunday.
Basically, my motto is that if I am still dancing on tables and snogging fit men when I reach my thirties, I am going to avoid having a mid-life crisis when I get to my forties.

My friend just took me to see an exhibition of works by Keith Proctor. Personally, I lean towards difficult and conceptual art, but I was so chuffed that my un-arty friend was interested in going to an opening that I gladly relented. His portraits of children playing made me think so much about my youth and how, as a city child I played. I live in quite a rough neighbourhood at the moment, and I am shocked all the time at how fast the kids seem to be growing up and getting into trouble. Last summer the little boy across the road was playing foot ball, now he is swearing and setting fires. The little girls are don’t skip rope, but run around in packs tormenting each other and destroying the local play area. I wonder if this is a result of living in an area where there are no easily accessible organized activities for children outside of school hours? Are the things that are simple and stimulate children to healthy play simply absent from their world, so they are compelled towards play that is destructive? This area is forgotten, parents are stressed and they are happy to send children out of the house to play in the street or the play area, are they blind to the fact that left alone in groups, the behaviour or the worst dictates the behaviour of the best? I suppose in desperate need of the space, they prefer to pretend that it doesn’t happen.

Some days it seems like a very short trip between doing on line searches for hen nights and Alzheimer’s disease care. I think I will be young forever, but I watch my parents ageing and I know that I am ageing as well. It isn’t something that people think about when they are choosing a partner. We should really consider if we are marrying somebody who really will love us when they are old and wrinkled, not somebody who is going to trade you in for a newer model when you begin to show signs of wear and tear. Its a bit sad, but it is all over the media. Men who are going through a mid life crisis, and leave the mother of their children for somebody half their age. What is it that causes people to do this? Fear of their own mortality no doubt. What is it that causes that compels the young women to go for the older wrinkled guys? I remember dating an older man when I was just twenty, and I loved the fancy dinners out when I was completely skint and struggling on a post university budget. It didn’t really last long, as I am not exactly trophy material, but the wine was nice, and I think about him every time I go past the cute little bistro where he took me and that I can never even hope of affording. Life delivers so much, not all of it very pretty. We can love the unloved and embrace the knowledge of ’good and evil'or we can live in denial.
