Trust your instinct in business

There’s a part in the new David Fincher film The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo where a very dangerous man tells one of the leading characters – quite rightly – that he should have learned to trust his instinct by now. He points out – and this is more of an observation than a judgement – that most people know only too well what is about to happen, yet their fear of looking silly or somehow inadequate prevents them from trusting their gut instinct. And life? Money? It all relies on instinct to a certain degree – numbers are one thing but they’re certainly not the be all and end all. There’s a lot to be said for going with what feels right and facing up to what looks wrong.

…the decision seems to make itself: you need quality, and experience equates to that…

Let’s say, for example, you’re starting a company that specialises in the most upmarket business suit imaginable. You’re selling online and the first thing you need to do is get some good web copy written for the site. Do you A) go with the more experienced writer who charges a lot but somehow seems less personable but has lots in his or her portfolio, or do you go for B) the writer who is cheaper, just starting out and has an enthusiasm that you feel is rare in people?

Of course, the decision seems to make itself: you need quality, and experience equates to that. Yet when you choose this person it ends up costing you much more than you would have liked and the writer seems jaded and unable to take criticism well.

Suddenly you remember the other writer, and quickly you decide to sack your present writer and start again with her…

Life is full of situations just like this. Ones where hindsight would have been good had it been there before. But does it really matter we make mistakes and don’t always trust our judgement? I don’t think so. The important thing is that we learn from these things and use our heads and our hearts in more equal measure in the future.
