Trust your instinct in business

posted by admin in 1

There’s a part in the new David Fincher film The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo where a very dangerous man tells one of the leading characters – quite rightly – that he should have learned to trust his instinct by now. He points out – and this is more of an observation than a judgement – that most people know only too well what is about to happen, yet their fear of looking silly or somehow inadequate prevents them from trusting their gut instinct. And life? Money? It all relies on instinct to a certain degree – numbers are one thing but they’re certainly not the be all and end all. There’s a lot to be said for going with what feels right and facing up to what looks wrong.

…the decision seems to make itself: you need quality, and experience equates to that…

When will it end

posted by admin in 1

I find myself getting more and more angry these days with the constant ‘nanny state'offering ‘advice'on what we should be doing with ourselves, our children, our homes, and even our money. I find it almost insulting some of the reports that come out these days, where we are being told how to raise our children, how to eat properly and how to look after our money. It seems as though soon there will be big posters telling me how to go to the toilet correctly!

The future in 200 years

posted by admin in 1

That title is wrong, actually. It should read: the present in 200 years. And this, below, is my imagining of it.

There will be no screens of any kind. There will be no computers, either. What there will be is the ability to see something and have it manifest right there before you at a moment’s notice. You will buy these things and there will be a restriction, of course, of what you can and can’t see in public (you couldn’t just have nude sexy women wandering about before you when there are families around).

There will be no Facebook in 200 years, because it is pointless. To send information to someone, all you need do is stand at a special Thought Teleportation Point and you will be able to connect with whoever it is instantly, providing they accept you communicating with them, of course.

I for one would love to be able to live in a world where I could communicate with anyone instantly. My phone, although brand-new, is utterly hopeless

But the world will be full of amazing things. Why? Because everyone will see the world how they need to see it. Depressed people will see a world which is not too happy and not too sad, and people who are stressed by crowds will see a world without so many people in it. In other words, it’ll be a kind of utopia.

The only thing which troubles me about this future world is the lack of problems. Because in a world without problems, surely that’s got to be a problem in its own right? For example, say I want to buy Caravan insurance and the man on the phone at the insurance company is being really nice. After a week of niceness, wouldn’t I like to feel some kind of tension. Wouldn’t I want to have something to get annoyed about? I don’t know for sure, but I think I would.

Of course, there will be plenty of problems which we will be pleased to see the back of. For example: the post arriving late, crime, murder, rape and all that. So I suppose the good things would out-weigh the negatives. And I for one would love to be able to live in a world where I could communicate with anyone instantly. My phone, although brand-new, is utterly hopeless about getting a signal anywhere. Besides that, I am always dropping it on the floor – something which wouldn’t happen in the future as it is quite possible that in 200 years there will be no floor.

Need a side income

Need a side income

Being a writer is a great job, so to speak, it doesn’t always pay the bills though. I have done my share of bussing tables and working in coffee shops and working behind grimy bars and now I just need to do a job that I love and that will inspire me while to write something extraordinary or just something that is a least creative. I have whittled my options down a bit and this is what I am left More

What to do with the rest of my life

I have been thinking a lot about mu future recently. It seems like a couple of weeks ago that I was enjoying a scrumptious Christmas dinner around the table with all my family and then no time later I am barbecuing in the park with a bunch of friends and the sun is shining brightly. What I mean is that time seems to pass by so quickly the calendar has jumper a few months from December to June without anything More

Playing

My friend just took me to see an exhibition of works by Keith Proctor. Personally, I lean towards difficult and conceptual art, but I was so chuffed that my un-arty friend was interested in going to an opening that I gladly relented. His portraits of children playing made me think so much about my youth and how, as a city child I played. I live in quite a rough neighbourhood at the moment, and I am shocked all the More

Growing Old with Dignity

Some days it seems like a very short trip between doing on line searches for hen nights and Alzheimer’s disease care. I think I will be young forever, but I watch my parents ageing and I know that I am ageing as well. It isn’t something that people think about when they are choosing a partner. We should really consider if we are marrying somebody who really will love us when they are old and wrinkled, not somebody who More

A Real Live Drama (On AND Off Set).

A Real Live Drama (On AND Off Set).

Up until a couple of weeks ago, everything was perfectly alright with my goggle box. I had a great choice of Freeview channels and I always got a really good picture on ‘Coronation Street’… But then, after a particularly wild and windy night, my aerial fell off the roof and landed outside the back door in three pieces. In mathematics, disaster is written thus; No reception / No TV = No ‘Corrie’!

I got on the internet and typed in, More
